Where are Homebuyers Moving in 2025?

The year’s not over, but the team at iMoving can still predict the top moving destinations of 2025. If you’re planning on a move, read on to find out where everyone is headed (and how much it’ll cost to move with the crowd).

2025 Moving Trends at a Glance

  • Arrivals: Florida, Texas, and California were popular destinations for state-to-state moving. Florida alone received 636,933 new transplants in 2024. However, our 2025 data shows Pennsylvania and Massachusetts in the lead this year.
  • Departures: Although California saw plenty of arrivals, it was also the point of origin for the most departures. 690,127 people left California in 2024, and according to our 2025 numbers, California is on track to be the biggest loser of the year again.
  • Popular Moving Routes: The most popular route was California to Texas. It usually costs between $3,900 and $7,500 to complete the move.

But First: How Did We Find this Data?

At iMoving, our mission is to make moving easier than ever - whether you’re going to the latest trendy destination, or following your own path to some quiet corner of the country. The first step of a successful and stress-free move is to do your homework, and fortunately, we did that for you too.

To make this study, we analyzed our own moving data and the data provided by the US Census Bureau to find the most popular destinations of 2025. This information included:

Using this data, we were able to identify trending destinations - and the destinations that were losing the most people year over year.

This information also showed us which routes were the most popular. And once we found the direction most transplants were moving, we were able to use our own marketplace to analyze the cost to move from destination to destination.

What States Are Gaining the Most People?

California, Florida, Texas, Georgia, and North Carolina typically rank in the top 5 destinations for state to state moving. However, our data for 2025 so far shows Pennsylvania and Massachusetts in the lead.

We compared our year-over-year moving data with data pulled from the US Census Bureau to find which states are gaining the most people. For this study, we focused on state to state moves only, meaning customers started in one state, but moved to a completely different state.

When we compared our moving data to the US Census Bureau’s data, the trends checked out. California, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and Texas appear to be the most popular moving destinations year over year. Interesting to note: New York sometimes battles its way into the top 5, as seen in our 2024 data in which it dethroned North Carolina.

Our 2025 data is still incomplete, but after peak moving season rolls around (summer), we’ll have a much clearer picture of what states are winning. We’re expecting it to shape up like previous years, especially since Florida, North Carolina, and Texas are already in play.

What States Are Losing the Most People?

California takes the crown for most departures - however dubious that honor may be. Other states losing high amounts of people? Florida, New Jersey, New York, and Texas. (Fortunately for Florida and Texas, they also get an influx of arrivals to balance out their losses.)

Now that we saw which states were popular destinations, we wanted to see which states were unpopular by mapping out points of origins. We analyzed our state to state moves to see which home states were losing the most people.

Year over year, California takes the top spot for most departures. And judging from our latest data for 2025, this year is going to be no different. Peak moving season hasn’t even happened yet, but California is already leading the pack for people getting out of state.

The Most Popular Moving Routes in America

Californians love to move to Texas, and New Yorkers love to move to Florida. We were surprised to see plenty of New Yorkers moving to New Jersey, and plenty of Floridians moving to Georgia.

Moving routes are an important metric to see where people are headed, and - if you live anywhere else - who’s getting the most Californian transplants. To find the most popular moving routes in America, we used Census Data to find out which state to state routes were seeing the most traffic.

California to Texas, California to Arizona, and California to Nevada… 3 of the top 10 moving routes start in the Golden State. New York isn’t doing so hot either: New York to Florida, New York to New Jersey, and New York to Pennsylvania accounted for another 3 of the top 10 moving routes.

Here’s How Much It Costs to Move

Long distance moving can cost as much as $17,000, but we’ve seen some jobs that were done for less than $1,000. It’s a huge window, but it all comes down to how far you’re traveling, and how much stuff you’re taking with you.

Every move is different, and some states are larger than others. For ease of readability, we looked at the 10 most popular moving routes, and provided estimated moving costs for a 3-bedroom home from state capital to state capital.
